Gustavo Rocha, a new parent and transcriber, shares his experience balancing work and personal growth. He researched the 10,000 hour rule for skill acquisition and found that it may not apply to everyone. The book "Outliers" popularized this rule, but research shows that gradual improvement over time is more accurate. With focused and deliberate practice, it only takes 20 hours to become reasonably good at a skill. This can be achieved in about a month with 45 minutes of practice a day. The 10,000 hour rule, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, suggests that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in a competitive field. However, research shows that skill acquisition is a gradual process and it only takes 20 hours of focused practice to become reasonably good at a skill. To improve a skill, break it down into smaller parts, use resources for self-correction, and commit to at least 20 hours of practice.
